Cambridge is a compact, walkable size so orient yourself with a guided tour of the colleges on foot. You’ll cover most of them including Peterhouse, founded in 1284 and the oldest and smallest of the 31 colleges, as well the spectacular Trinity College, with its illustrious list of alumni such as Alfred Tennyson and Vladimir Nabokov. Many of the colleges have gardens that are open to the public. Pembroke and Clare are standouts, as is King’s College, with one of the world’s largest fan-vaulted ceilings in its gothic chapel.
