Well named, Vil’laggio does manage to present the ambience of a friendly local restaurant, aided no doubt by the checked tablecloths and, in the semi-open kitchen, the triumphal wood-fired oven with its glossy white, blue and terracotta tiles. From here, thin-crust pizzas are paddled onto plates with gusto. While the range of toppings tends to be broader than the traditional line-up – think honey-roasted pumpkin or chicken pesto – the traditional combos are also very good, among them prosciutto e funghi and the margherita. The functional wine list includes some Italian varietals as well as a number of Queensland wines, as befits a “local” Italian. A bar at the front provides congenial space for viewing the passing parade in this lively eating-out area, and a covered courtyard out the back is attractive on tropical evenings.
