Airbnb just got more luxe.

How does a designer loft in Melbourne’s Brunswick sound, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows and a freestanding bathtub? Or perhaps an entire apartment in Milan mere footsteps from the Duomo?

As the accommodation site celebrates its 10th anniversary of disrupting the way we travel the world, it’s launched several new offerings designed to make a stay in an Airbnb property more upmarket – which means no more worrying if a place will actually live up to the photographs.

Airbnb Plus is a stamp of approval only given to properties that meet strict criteria. They must pass a first-hand, 100-point inspection (including that the kitchen is stocked with cooking equipment, that towels are on hand and the bed is comfy) and are run by hosts with a rating of 4.8 or higher.

Extra creature comforts do mean these properties are more expensive than other Airbnb listings, with the average price sitting at around US$200 (A$255) a night.

Listings that achieve the Plus status will have a red and white “plus” badge under the listing. For now, there are more than 2000 Plus properties available in Austin, Barcelona, Chicago, Cape Town, Los Angeles, London, Melbourne, Milan, Rome, San Francisco, Shanghai, Sydney and Toronto.

And while users have long been able to uncover some truly glamorous accommodation options through the site, it will now have a dedicated section for boutique hotels, bed and breakfasts and weird and wacky properties that you’ll tell tales about for years, such as treehouses.

Airbnb also has plans to introduce a service late this year called Beyond by Airbnb, which will be an edited collection of high-end homes – as if you needed another excuse to book a holiday.
