Qantas’s new “I’ve been everywhere” campaign ticks off 12 destinations on every traveller’s bucket list. Here’s how to do three of them.
Bali’s most happening ’hood has a rebel heart but even rebels will shun sleeping in to sip the coffee at Crate Cafe (Jalan Canggu Padang Linjong; +62 812 3894 3040) each morning. With its convergence of rice paddies and street art, Canggu is redefining island life and originality is at its core. Wander along Jalan Batu Mejan towards Echo Beach to view local graffiti and the area’s renowned murals. Don’t miss the vivid works by world-famous French artist Seth Globepainter on derelict huts on the beach near Old Man’s beer garden. Then slip into Spring Spa, a light and airy sanctuary off buzzy Jalan Raya Batu Bolong, and bliss out with an indulgent hair treatment.
Few places encapsulate Soho’s boho-chic, good-time vibe better than Balans Soho Society. The restaurant-bar is open virtually around the clock and is the pick for brunch, thanks to The High Society Eggs Benedict (poached eggs, lobster, avocado, bacon, English muffin and hollandaise sauce). Next, shop for pieces by designers such as Tom Ford, Burberry, Etro and Givenchy at Liberty London, a labyrinthine department store with a majestic mock-Tudor façade. Then unwind at the Art Nouveau-style champagne bar inside Kettner’s Townhouse, a recently restored Soho icon established in 1867 by the rumoured former private chef of Emperor Napoleon III. Be sure to mosey into Kettner’s snazzy restaurant for classic French dishes using local ingredients, such as Swaledale côte de boeuf with bone marrow and bordelaise sauce.
Williamsburg, New York City
Williamsburg does not do cool by halves. Embrace the excess at Juliette, a chic French bistro with plants hanging from the ceiling. Sated by the crisp duck confit, head to Nitehawk Cinema for an afternoon matinée. Drinks can be procured mid-flick by scribbling your order on slips of paper, which are periodically collected by the staff. Later, with dusk setting in, climb to the rooftop of Wythe Hotel for a Rare Jewel (gin, port, grenadine and prosecco) at The Ides Bar. Right across the East River, poking defiantly into the sky is the Empire State Building. You have now arrived.
