253-257 Maroondah Highway, Ringwood, Melbourne.

When the fire station was built in 1929, Ringwood was so rural there was living accommodation for the firemen and their families off the main area where the trucks were housed. Eighty years later, Ringwood is an outer-eastern suburb and where the fire engines once were is the main eating space of this restaurant. The mood is casual and welcoming, the food mainly Mediterranean in its inspiration, and the wine list both well-chosen and reasonably priced. The Firehouse opens from breakfast onwards, so the private rooms could be used for any meal during the day, including afternoon tea. At night, it all dresses up a little, with tablecloths and candlelight. Function menus are usually set: for dinner, tapas to start, followed by a choice of main courses, with extras available, all at modest prices. The Firehouse has three private rooms: the red room seats 25, the green room 16, and the blue room accommodates 10.
Open: breakfast, lunch & dinner Wed-Sun. Licensed. Mains $25-$32, private dining menu from $49.
