The Terrace has one of the state’s best wine lists and a temperature-controlled, blackwood-panelled wine room that guests are welcome to wander through to make a selection. The choice isn’t restricted to trophy wines and is well-priced, so it’s easy to find something appealing, and the half-bottle selection is appreciated. Steak tartare with traditional garnishes is a good starter, or the sashimi of local fish, which, while not presented with quite the skill of a Japanese master, is delicious, and the wasabi is fresh and local. The main-course selection runs the full gamut of classics, often with an unexpected twist, such as lamb rack with foie gras peanut butter cannelloni; or roasted hapuka with an oyster beignet. More than lip-service is paid to vegetarians, with dishes such as salt-roasted silken tofu with a lyonnaise tart, and goat’s curd soufflé with truffled pea puree.
Open: dinner daily. Licensed. Mains $29-$52.
