Although Gouger Street is noted for its many Chinese restaurants, none has much of a dessert menu. Sugar Bowl has filled the gap, with its Hong Kong-style sugar hit. There’s a long, colourful menu that ranges from mango black sticky rice to Swiss chocolate fondue with chopped fruit or green tea chocolate rice balls and a lurid-looking mango waffle with ice-cream. Options include mix-and-match desserts where you choose a base – tapioca pearls, grass jelly, tofu or glutine rice, for example – and top it with anything from lychee jelly or red bean soup to a range of chopped fruits. The dispensers of sugar syrup on each table seem a little unnecessary for all but the most dedicated sweet tooth. A pot of scented chrysanthemum tea will help.
Open: daily from 5pm. Unlicensed. Desserts $5-$14.
