New Zealand’s South Island is renowned for its luxury lodges, each set against a dramatic background. A case in point: Matakauri – an alpine lakeside retreat with four suites within the lodge and eight outlying cottages. There’s a private porch, a bedroom with sitting area and an open fireplace in all of the suites and cottages but the centerpiece of each is a freestanding bathtub, sitting next to a retractable floor-to-ceiling window with jaw-dropping views of Lake Wakatipu and Walter Peak mountain. Tariff is steep but includes breakfast, pre-dinner drinks and canapés and dinner, personally created by chef Jonathan Rogers after consulting with the guests. There’s also an infinity pool at the lodge – complete with a jacuzzi – that’s great for stargazing on a clear, balmy night.
While most luxury lodges of New Zealand are not close to the cities, the Matakauri is a convenient 10-minute drive to Queenstown.
