Heading to Christchurch? From local coffee haunts to an award winning restaurant, this is where to eat. 

Breakfast

C1 Espresso

Located in the CBD in the former High Street Post Office, this popular spot has an industrial fit-out, high ceilings and quirky art lining the walls. Stop by for breakfast and order the supergrain muesli or the open breakfast burrito. For kids (and big kids), keep an eye on the menu for selected dishes delivered by the cafe’s pneumatic tube system. With seating inside and out, C1 Espresso caters for small and large groups.

Coffee

Made Espresso Bar

For a coffee pit stop, head to the other side of Avon River to Made Espresso Bar on Montreal Street. It’s known for its organic coffee and milk and if you have a craving for something sweet, try the homemade lemon and plum little cakes or chocolate brownies.

Lunch

Duo Dining Room & Bar

After exploring Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens in the morning, refuel across the road from the main entrance (Rolleston Avenue) at Duo Dining Room & Bar. You'll find a bold interior - striking murals line the walls – and cosy booths, which are highly coveted. The menu features modern Asian cuisine with a distinctly European influence. Order the crispy eggplant with fragrant Sichuan sticky sauce and pickled ginger or the Chinese fried chicken with Sriracha mayonnaise and crushed peanuts.

Dinner

Twenty Seven Steps

Located in the lively New Regent Street precinct in the CBD and, as its name suggests, accessible after a hike up 27 stairs, this trendy spot exudes charm. The rustic European-inspired menu is concise, with an emphasis on local produce, and the refined wine list showcases an incredible selection of renowned regional wines.

Roots Restaurant

Awarded Restaurant of the Year in the Cuisine NZ Good Food Awards in 2015, Roots Restaurant in the port town of Lyttelton is a must for foodies. This intimate fine-diner serves ever-changing dégustation menus with a focus on sustainable produce sourced from the restaurant’s own garden, foraging and local farms within a 100-kilometre radius. The brainchild of chef Giulio Sturla and his partner, Christy Martin, Roots Restaurant is wildly popular so be sure to book well in advance.
