Global roaming with Ruby Rose

With frequent flyer miles to rival a Boeing 747, Australian presenter, writer, designer, DJ and model Ruby Rose knows a thing or two about travel.

Whether she’s jetting around the globe to interview celebrities, spin the decks, or rub shoulders with the fashion folk, Ruby Rose has a flight itinerary as busy as her resume. Here Travel Insider gets the scoop on her favourite hotspots, hotels and hideaways.

You travel so much, what destination tops your list?
It would have to be Berlin, Germany. My parents are from there and I love all the museums and culture and it’s the only place where my last name (Langenheim) isn’t funny.

Where in the world have you found the best…

Drinks: Drinks are always great at Soho House members clubs. They have amazing cocktails especially their new Moscow mule. They have a great wine selection but the cocktails are delish.

Relaxed atmosphere: Laos. The weather is divine and the people are so kind and giving. It is less touristy than Bali and much more untouched. Cheap, relaxed and you end up feeling like a new person when you leave.

Music: I like music in Australia. I love our live music culture, our Melbourne bars and laneway festivals. Outside of Australia I would say Germany. I love German hip hop too.

Looking crowd: New York has a lot of very very good looking people. I love their style and the way the street style blends with high fashion.

Fashion:  New York has the greatest mix of fashion so I love it. I also really want to visit Japan, I have heard great things.

Hotel room:
This is hard. I have probably forgotten most of the places I have stayed. The W in L.A is good, also The Petit Ermitage In L.A was really sweet and has great staff.

Heading to LA? Be sure to read our hot cocktail bars guide.

You're one of Australia’s best known LGBT ambassadors. What are your thoughts on the recent trend of LGBT branded hotels (see Lords Hotel South Beach). Have you ever stayed in one?
No, I haven’t yet. But I think it’s great they exist and I would be curious to see what they are like and how they cater to the gay community. I am working most times I travel, so I don’t pick where I stay.

Would that branding sway you to stay at one hotel over another?
Not necessarily, I think they are great for people that aren’t as open with their sexuality as I am. For people who want to feel comfortable being free to express themselves knowing it is completely acceptable. I guess the only time I would consider staying in one is if I was in a country where I didn’t feel safe to be who I am in that regard.

Which cities do you feel have the most diverse and open minded energy and what do you love about them?
New York is the most open I have found. I guess that’s quite obvious as they have just made gay marriage legal. You walk down the street in NY and you see gay couples holding hands and nobody bats an eyelid. They are current and live in the future, not the past.

Can you tell us which songs have got repeat rotation on your iPod at the moment?
Adele, Tydi, Gotye.

What's your tip to taking on a long-haul flight?
