Behind the imposing white facade of what is known simply as Covent Garden is the home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet and the opera house’s very own orchestra. There are three restaurants, two bars and a four-tiered auditorium boasting boxes, balconies and comfortable claret-coloured seats. Surtitles are used for all operas. The Mariinsky Theatre’s production of Richard Wagner’s four-opera Ring cycle, conducted by Valery Gergiev, takes place July 29-August 1.
