Robie House, Chicago

01 April 2009

Caroline Baum

5757 S Woodlawn Avenue, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

With its low-slung profile, virtually flat roof, overhanging eaves, decorative glass windows and emphasis on the horizontal, this residential masterpiece is the perfect expression – and foremost example – of the famed Prairie style. Typical of Wright during this period, he also designed all the interiors, including fixtures, furniture and lighting. He called the home “the cornerstone of modern architecture”. A total renovation will be unveiled next year to mark the 100th anniversary of its completion.
