Orchard Garden Hotel, San Francisco
The first Californian hotel built to US Green Building Council standards – and officially approved by the City of San Francisco as a Green Business – opened in late 2006 at a cost of $US25m ($25.8m). It uses chemical-free cleaning products, recycled paper and soy-based inks, has a 100 percent tobacco-free environment and is the first San Francisco hotel to use a guestroom key-card energy-control system. Sustainable, seasonal and regional food is available at Roots, the hotel’s contemporary restaurant.
