The shape shifters: Norman Foster

29 June 2009

Acclaimed architects and design commentators reflect on the cities, eras, inventions and trends that have inspired them.

Foster + Partners has offices in more than 20 countries. Sir Norman Foster became the 21st Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate in 1999 and won the Praemium Imperiale Award for Architecture in 2002. Projects include 30 St Mary Axe (“the Gherkin”), London; the Reichstag, Berlin; and Beijing Airport.

The precinct with the most notable examples of fine architecture…
The Forum in Rome – where the architecture requires you to use your imagination.

Most useful design trend of the past decade…
The realisation that buildings that work with nature can be more human, more poetic and, at the same time, preserve precious resources.

Wish you had designed…
Countless everyday items that are useful and give pleasure: the corkscrew, the paperclip, the penknife, the propelling pencil. And other things that we currently think impossible – the carbon dioxide-fuelled car, the everlasting light bulb, the artificial heart.
