Mud has definite chocolate connotations – think the ubiquitous chocolate mud cake – but this casual riverside dining room’s eponymous mud is a thousand miles from such ubiquity. It’s a rich, low-slung square made of layers of chocolate, each of which provides different textural pleasures. While the mud is a permanent fixture on the dessert menu (with variations in the accompanying house-made ice-cream – maybe coffee hazelnut or peanut brittle), other dishes are distinctly seasonal, such as stone fruit or rhubarb crumble with vanilla bean ice-cream. The Italian-leaning menu also guarantees a pannacotta, although it’s subject to change – maybe almond with vanilla roasted peaches or buttermilk with marsala poached pears. Prior to dessert, your options include an excellent risotto, pasta, or some of Tasmania’s best grilled meat.
Open: lunch & dinner daily. Licensed. Desserts $13.50.
