Monte Cristo, New South Wales
Christopher Crawley once held most of the land around Junee, and Monte Cristo (1884) was his grand sandstone hilltop powerbase. Abandoned by his descendants in 1948, it suffered from vandalism and neglect until current owners Reginald and Olive Ryan arrived in 1963. But did the creepy Crawleys ever really leave? This is Australia’s “most haunted house”, with phantom footsteps, spectral faces at windows and more spirits than a distillery, perhaps, including Christopher’s formidable and reclusive widow, who died in the house at 92 years of age in 1933. Daily tours and devonshire tea. B&B with ghost tour/dinner, $165.
