There can be few, if any, better restaurant locations close to Perth than Millbrook Winery at Jarrahdale in the Perth Hills. It is perched on the upper level with extensive views overlooking the marron-stocked dam, the hillside of the national forest (kangaroo-dotted in the late afternoon), vineyard and orchard. Two sides of the restaurant are wall-to-ceiling windows or French doors opened when weather permits. Picnic baskets are available for lunching in the picture-postcard grounds in spring and summer. What makes a trip to Millbrook unforgettable is outstanding chef Roy Thomson. His cooking is sharply focused and assured, and he delivers clean, fresh flavours in thoughtfully constructed dishes that surprise and delight. The changing tasting platter is diverse, generous, and might feature irresistible arancini balls and deeply flavoured soup. Alternatively, the coconut crumbed prawns are crisp yet succulent, the sweet potato latke provides a textural contrast with orange and fennel-cured salmon; and the velvety potato gnocchi sits in a lush gorgonzola sauce. The Millbrook wines are excellent especially the sauvignon, viogniers and shiraz viognier. Attentive service.
