Los Angeles: Sleeping partners

02 January 2010

You don’t have to be a Hollywood A-lister to live like one in Los Angeles. This is an access-all-areas pass to some of La La Land’s best hang-outs, where luxury lodging is complemented by quality in-house dining.

The good news for visitors to Los Angeles is that luxury accommodation focuses on quality in-house dining. In a city notoriously difficult to get around, having a great bar and restaurant in your hotel, or within walking distance, is a plus. And if you’d rather not leave your room at all, there’s always the room-service menu by your in-house celebrity chef. As film critic Rex Reed once said, “In Hollywood, if you don’t have happiness, you send out for it.” Here’s a look at LA’s best sleep/eat combos.

Peak season in LA

When it comes to luxury accommodation, peak season in LA is “awards season”, which starts with the Golden Globes (January 17 2010) and ends with the Oscars (March 7 2010). In between there are the Screen Actors Guild Awards (January 23 2010), the Grammys (January 31 2010) and the Independent Spirit Awards (March 5 2010). Northern Hemisphere summer months are otherwise generally busier than winter, especially for hotels with rooftop bars and pools.

  • Last time I was in LA I stayed in the Standard - it's a great option if you want to be downtown. Has a pool on the rooftop and a pretty cute bar.
  • Last time I was in LA I stayed at the Farmers Daughter on South Fairfax. It's very cute, very affordable and located right across the road from the Farmers Market which has a feast of great food. The hotel is also on a popular bus route to Hollywood and Santa Monica etc.
  • Hard to best the Roosevelt, just make sure you have a room near the pool...the rooms in the main part of the hotel are getting tired
  • Magic Castle Hotel - Hollywood Absolutely magnificent - there is just nothing to whinge about at all here. The entire staff are just wonderful. The property itself is a former apartment block and has retained the original floorplan - hence the "rooms" are huge. Heated pool (in California!) is fastidiously clean. The property itself is getting a little tired - but - IF this was a concern then the staff and facilities more than make up for flaky paint on the gutters.
