One of Slopestyle’s biggest names, American snowboarder Chas Guldemond has collected an impressive number of titles since going pro in 2006. After winning the Burton US Open in 2009, he cemented his reputation as one of America’s most serious competitors.
Here, he shares local haunts from his hometown Lake Tahoe, as well as his favourite spots to hit the slopes.
Which competition have you enjoyed the most and why?
I would have to say the Toyota Big Air in Sapporo, Japan is my favorite. The Japanese people are such great fans and the atmosphere at the contest is electric.
Do you have a preferred snowboarding location in California?
I love shredding at my home mountain, Northstar. There’s nothing better than snowboarding a fresh groomed park all day before grabbing a drink at mid-mountain.
Name three must-do activities in Lake Tahoe.
Hang out at Truckee Thursdays, which is a live music, beer garden and farmers’ market held throughout summer, wakeboard on Lake Tahoe and take any hike with a view of the lake.
Describe your favorite secret location for Lake Tahoe visitors.
My favorite is in the Sierra Buttes north of Lake Tahoe because of the huge pine trees, golden light and awesome terrain.
What are your top spots for dinner and drinks in Tahoe?
Jax At The Tracks for food when you are in Truckee, and for drinks Tavern 6330 in the village at Northstar.
Where is the most impressive snowboarding area you’ve visited internationally?
Austria has extremely impressive mountains and they have me in awe every time I visit.
Where do you go for snow-free holidays?
Usually I head to Mexico or my parent’s house in New Hampshire.
What was your best experience when you visited Australia in August?
I love golfing and shredding in Australia's winter, it’s a great combo.
Which destination is next on your bucket list?
I would like to go on an African Safari.
What are your travel essentials?
My wife, my boy Rocky and a good pillow.
Do you have any tips for staying fit when travelling so regularly?
I like to use a TRX system [home suspension training] when I'm traveling. It's super light and you can hang it anywhere for a full body workout.
