La Vache à Carreaux wakes up after dark. It’s mainly a wine bar, with a gem of a wine list – Santa Duc Gigondas, Yann Chave Hermitage, cult wines such as Granges des Pères from Languedoc and less familiar drops such as Domaine St Nicolas Fiefs Vendéens pinot noir from the Loire. There’s food, too – goat’s cheese salad, charcuterie, cheese plates and the like – all designed to complement the wines.
