Frederick Piesse developed railways in return for land grants back in the 1880s; he soon found himself the biggest landholder in WA’s Katanning district. Today he’s the town’s biggest statue. Piesse loved to entertain; his seven-bedroom mansion (1902) has a ballroom, tennis courts and croquet field. Kobeelya became a girls’ school until 1986. It’s now a conference centre that can sleep 75.
