Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs
This 405,000ha park has more than a million visitors a year eager to see the majestic desert landscape of cactus trees, wildflowers and fauna. The park is named for the trees that Mormon pioneers likened to the outstretched arms of Joshua leading them to the Promised Land. Pick up maps, books and hiking guides from the visitor centre (open year-round 8am to 5pm).
