6 Avenue Frémiet (16e), Paris, France.
The seizième (16th) arrondissement is a manicured, upscale residential neighbourhood as far away from the tourist hordes as you can get. This is Paris for Parisians, rather than camera-toters and backpackers. The ornate classic exterior of Hôtel Sezz in no way prepares you for the minimalist magic that designer Christophe Pillet – a former protégé of Philippe Starck – has wielded inside. Many of the furnishings are design icons in their own right, from graceful, swooping floor lamps and elegant leather sofas to sleek leather and chrome-plated beds standing majestically in the middle of the rooms. Floors are black parquet, walls are rough-hewn stone, while peek-a-boo glass screens separate bedrooms from bathrooms, many of which feature huge Japanese-style slate baths. Modern glamour is rife, from the little tin of Petrossian vodka-filled chocolate “caviar” pearls on your bed to the glamorous, glowing Veuve Clicquot Bar. The most requested suite is room 75, with the biggest bed and a distant view of the Eiffel Tower. Don’t look for the reception desk – there isn’t one; each guest is assigned a personal butler around the clock.
