There aren’t too many people who could point to Mozambique on a map but that can only add fuel to the adventurous luxury traveller’s fire.

The Quirimbas Archipelago, just off the northern coastline of the African nation, is home to this week’s splurge: the newly reopened Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort.

Intimate is the word on Medjumbe Island, which is one kilometre long by 300 metres wide. The hotel comprises just 12 thatched villas, each with direct access to the powdery sands. Drink or swim? No need to decide. Your private splash pool features a “champagne step” on which to sip bubbles while taking in the Indian Ocean views.

An extensive refurbishment has ensured a distinctly African flavour, with colourful patterns that reflect the vibrant local culture set against shades of blue and aqua and calming ocean sounds.

Amid all this breathtaking serenity, activities include snorkelling, diving, whale watching, remote island picnics and camping out for a night under the stars (in a four-poster bed, of course).

This heavenly hideaway, which has a nightly price tag starting at around $1300 (exchange rates may vary), is aimed squarely at honeymooners and other hopeless romantics and is strictly adults only. Best call the babysitter before you book.
