Known by visitors and even locals as “the Christmas shop”, Käthe Wohlfahrt is where you go if you want to have that warm 25 December feeling any time of the year. Filled with ornaments and intricate displays, you will use the phrase “don’t touch” more than usual with the little ones, but they will probably be too hypnotised by the cuckoo clock collection to care. During the month of December, like most places in Germany, the entire town of Rothenburg ob der Taube turns into a Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) and it is really magical to walk around the squares with your mulled wine and hot chocolates taking it all in.
Käthe Wohlfahrt has whimsical, Christmassy shops in cities and towns around Germany, including Nuremberg, Bamberg, Heidelberg and Berlin, but the Rothenburg ob der Taube location is the original and the most magical.
