Another new treasure to add to Paris’ modern architectural landscape is the Jean Nouvel-designed mesh-metal-clad Philharmonie de Paris. The project was built to expand music’s penetration outside the realms of its traditional patron and has a 2400-seat auditorium to fulfill its purpose of changing the way people perceive and participate with orchestral productions. It is the home of the Orchestra of Paris, and will also house educational, rehearsal and cultural programming. For example, David Bowie’s sell-out V&A exhibition took up residence in its first year.

Location

Located on the edge of the city to the north, the leafy 19th arrondissement is defined by two public parks – Parc des Buttes Chaumont and Parc de la Villette – and is crossed by two canals – Canal Saint-Denis and the Canal de l'Ourcq. It also accommodates the new Jean Nouvel-designed Philharmonie de Paris.
