Cullen, Western Australia
A concern for the environment led Vanya Cullen through organics to adopting biodynamic practices in viticulture and winemaking. As she is convinced that these have contributed to improvements in the quality of wines of one of Australia’s best boutique producers, it’s no surprise Cullen wants this philosophy to influence all the family enterprises. So the winery restaurant serves organic or biodynamic produce and the restaurant has its own vegetable garden. The best local produce is used: wood-fired bread and Olio Bello olive oil from Yallingup; jumbo prawns and beef from a biodynamic and organic cooperative in Margaret River. Vegetarians are well catered for and carnivores enjoy the likes of sugar-cured kangaroo fillet with pepper egg noodles, and duck confit with white polenta accompanied by figs, rocket, pine nuts and red onion. The space is an extension of the rustic cellar door with high ceilings and lots of natural light, leading to al fresco areas. The wines are excellent, the service friendly and efficient.
Open: lunch daily. Licensed (Cullen wines only). Mains $25-$36.
