There’s a homely feel to the restaurant in this rural retreat half an hour from Canberra, yet there’s also a level of professionalism in the food and presentation that takes it a notch or two above the average country guesthouse. Owner Richard Everson is a highly trained chef and unabashed supporter of local produce, making extensive use of olive oil, beef, duck, free-range eggs, fruit and vegetables from neighbouring farms and the wider region. After dinner, you can retreat to the comfortable guestrooms. Evelyn is German (and responsible for many of the desserts) – hence the name: Schönegg means “pretty corner”.
