Global Roaming: London comforts

03 December 2008

With London snuggling in for what promises to be a chilly winter, the city’s restaurants are responding with warmly comforting meals that are accented by fresh seasonal produce.

Theo Randalls restaurant, London
Singapore’s Min Jiang just opened a flagship restaurant here with panoramic views of Kensington Gardens, and its lush dim sum dumplings and glossy red Peking Duck are every bit as delicious. Across town, the Royal Academy of Art’s west wing is hosting the much talked about temporary restaurant-installation Flash until 19 January. After a lively pre-prandial mandarin mimosa, order the roast quail with lardons, pecans and maple syrup jus.

At Theo Randall’s eponymous restaurant, nothing casts aside the winter blues better than his piping hot fish stew and sunny Amalfi lemon tart. For a wonderful Sunday brunch, head to Petersham Nurseries Cafe where Aussie chef Skye Gyngell conjures magic with deep fried Violetta artichokes with an anchovy and mint dressing, and a sensational prune steamed pudding.

And this being London, afternoon teas are de rigueur. The Caramel Room at the gorgeous Berkeley hotel serves up dainty biscuits and cakes inspired by the current autumn/winter runway fashion shows. Expect a shoe biscuit inspired by Christian Louboutin complete with red-candy soles, and a Smythson yellow Maze Bag made of banana Madeira cake.
