Cockatoo Island, Sydney

28 July 2008

David Levell

Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, Australia.

The harbour’s largest island has done time as a jail, a reformatory and a major shipyard – 250 ships were repaired and/or converted here during WWII. These days it’s a Heritage-listed historic site, welcoming tourists and hosting occasional concerts. Launched in April, the island’s new 135-site campground lets you sleep under both starlight and the glow of the city skyline. From $45 a site (maximum four persons).
