There was a time when Clairault’s greatest charm was the fact that so few people could find their way there. The Martin family’s purchase of an adjacent block with a Caves Road frontage, and building a road through the natural bushland to the restaurant and cellar door has transformed the property into one of the region’s most popular destinations. The choice of Will Shields as winemaker has lifted the quality of their wines: semillon sauvignon blanc, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and cabernet are all first-rate. The setting is a nice mix of natural bushland and neatly cultivated lawns and garden with the vineyard a backdrop par excellence. The food has been consistently good for years: stylishly modern with a lightness of touch and fascinating with its interplay of textures. While taking its inspiration from diverse sources (Middle Eastern, Asian, Italian), the seasonal menu feels just right for the Margaret River of here and now. It’s a compact menu, yet appeals to a wide range of tastes. Very good coffee. Excellent service.
Open: lunch daily. Licensed (Clairault wines only). Mains $29-$38, five-course degustation $65 without wine, $95 with.
