  • Cod with clams, Bodegon Alejandro, San Sebastian
In the heart of the Parte Vieja (the old town), Bodegón Alejandro is an affordable, informal way to experience Michelin-starred chef Martín Berasategui’s food. The menu is a nice balance of local classics (fish soup or cod served with clams) and modern interpretations such as slow-cooked eggs on roughly mashed potatoes. The slow-roasted lamb shoulder is particularly good and the junket, which is made at the table, is memorable. Menus from €33.50 ($55). Berasategui also operates a gastronomic restaurant and the cafeteria at Kursaal, San Sebastián’s waterfront convention centre. The cafeteria is good for breakfast, a quick, informal lunch or even pintxos (the Basque word for tapas that’s pronounced “pinchos”). Also try Casa Nicolasa, Urepel or Casa Urola, which are all in the Parte Vieja.
