Bira, in the old fishing village of Barra de Guaratiba, is a top-end restaurant that serves classic Brazilian seafood like the coconut stew, moqueca, in a lovely, open-air restaurant overlooking the mangrove swamps. You will need a car if you are not prepared to pay the $100 taxi fare – or to brave the 387 bus, which costs a dollar and runs along the beachfront. Open Thursday to Sunday only.
The mains are between BRL80 and BRL130 ($50-$80), and serve up to three people.
