Home to more than 700 species and 1,300 animals, including natives such as quokkas, kangaroos, koalas, wombats and echidnas, the Perth Zoo is a great day out for families. There’s a range of excellent programs on offer. Our pick is the Close Encounters Eye To Eye selection – choose from lemurs, Tassie devils, orangutans, penguins, lions and more, then go into that animal’s quarters to see them being fed. (Some age restrictions apply.) If you’re visiting during the WA school holidays, look our for the Zoo Crew program (for children 8-13 years) – the kids will spend a day in restricted-access areas, whip up dishes for the animals and get a zoo-keeper’s view. Bookings are required. The zoo is in South Perth across the river, about three-and-a-half kilometres from the city centre. It’s a five-minute drive/taxi from the CBD; you can catch a ferry from the Barrack Street Jetty or, if you’re feeling energetic, walk across the Narrows Bridge.
