This is the closest you’ll ever get to a real-life Willy Wonka factory.

For a limited time, dessert and lolly museum Sugar Republic has sprung up in Melbourne and is a homage to all your favourite sweet treats. Fairy floss, gum balls, ice-cream, sherbet, cake – if it’s bad for your teeth, you can guarantee it’s featured in one of the 14 brightly coloured rooms.

But where to begin your sweets sojourn? Perhaps begin by crossing a technicolour bridge filled with sherbet before climbing inside the life-size gumball machine. Then stroll through a forest of enormous inflatable bananas (both a divisive lolly and a delicious ice-cream topping), engage with the interactive sprinkles wall and finally snap a strongly encouraged selfie in front of giant iterations of two of Australia’s favourite ice-creams, the Bubble O Bill and Gaytime.

And if the sensory overload wasn’t already enough, you can really please your sweet tooth by indulging in some of the free lollies and ice-cream on offer.

The exhibition, inside the former MacRobertson’s confectionary factory on Fitzroy’s Smith Street, is only for just eight weeks, until 17 August.
