At this popular bar and restaurant in the centre of town, yum cha is served on a variety of quirky repurposed trolleys. Everything is made in-house by Andrew Third and his team, from the classic siu mai to the unique wallaby rendang jiaozi and cucumber topped with salmon tartare, salmon roe and tapioca in soy and black vinegar. A bright bowl of housemade pickled vegetables complements shiitake, bacon and calamari spring rolls. Enjoy a glass of Delamere sparkling rosé or indulge in a Brocken Spectre gin infused with locally grown saffron from the gin trolley (yes, there’s a gin trolley!). Don’t miss the dessert cart with miso salted caramel slice and housemade mochi (rice cake).

Me Wah

This elegant Chinese restaurant – owned and operated by Stephen Tso and his father, Gordon, who mans the kitchen – is a Hobart institution. Traditional dim sum are made with the best Tasmanian ingredients. Steamed dumplings are filled with local mushrooms and black-truffle sauce or blue-eye trevalla and snow peas (order the housemade XO). The pan-fried pot stickers with diced pork, cabbage, ginger and pork broth are a standout, as is the wok-fried arrow squid with five-spice, salt and chili. Abalone is braised with handmade egg noodles, spring onions and shiitake. There’s a selection of tea – from the fermented and aged Pu-erh of Yunnan to Fujian’s oolong – plus an award-winning wine list. For a sweet finish, try the sesame croquettes with custard or matcha crème brûlée
