For exemplary sub-continental cuisine, look no further than these five standouts.

Cinnamon Club

At this Norwood award-winner, inspired Indian fare is served under the animated eye of a vibrant Ganesha mural. The menu is a mind-bending array: more than 100 dishes, including robust curries, over twenty meat-free options, traditional specialities like dosa and biryani, and an assortment of breads, including pillowy naan and buttery roti.

211A The Parade, Norwood; (08) 8431 3311

Jasmin

For more than thirty years, Jasmin has been an Adelaide mainstay – even former guest Marco Pierre White had a positive thing or two to say about this establishment. Blue-cheese naan is a surprising standout starter, as is a piquant mustard-infused mushroom. Crowd-pleasing mains include tender Punjabi lamb cutlets and fish fans should keep an eye out for the delicately spiced special, barramundi tandoori. It’s worth saving room for gulab jamun, a syrup-soaked sponge, if you’re a sweet tooth.

Beyond India

This smart, contemporary dining room in North Adelaide is well loved by locals – that’s thanks to the affable service and the broad-ranging cuisine, which isn’t focused on one Indian sub-region and instead combines several for a delightful sub-continental experience. Highlights include Hyderabadi-style goat curry, Goan coastal fish curry and barrah kebab (spice infused lamb cutlets).

Chefs of Tandoori – Second Innings

Cricket aficionados will appreciated this Unley haunt: it’s not just the name, which nods to the sport, but the bar is also decorated with wickets. If you aren’t a cricket-lover, it doesn’t matter: you’ll still enjoy the crispy onion bhaji (some of Adelaide’s best), array of tasty tandoori (prawn, chicken, seekh kebab, paneer), rich and satisfying slow-cooked goat curry, and, for devotees of serious spice, the beef “zingaloo”.

259-269 Unley Road, Malvern; 8373 5055

The Snake Charmer

Run by husband-and-wife team Munjula and Andrew Watts for close to forty years, The Snake Charmer boasts warm service, an unpretentious vibe and authentic, home-style cooking that pleases. Order the vegetable pakoras and lamb curry crepe to start then move onto the goat durbari and murgh tandoori.

60 Unley Road, Unley; (08) 8272 2624
