Luxury travellers, romantic escapes, special-occasion splurges.
New York has The Plaza, Paris has The Ritz, London has The Dorchester... and Sydney has the Park Hyatt, a hotel that nails the spirit of the city. Its curved beige façade nods to Sydney’s beaches, while its refined, pared-back interiors do little to distract from the gobsmacking harbour outlook. Everything you’ve heard about the service is true, too – it’s warm, courteous and, most importantly, on the ball. Throw in a world-class spa, an elegant restaurant and a rooftop pool with a 360-degree view that takes in the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and city skyline and you have the makings of a truly iconic hotel.
You’ll have to get through the worst of Sydney traffic to reach the hotel, located about 30-minutes drive from the airport in the city’s Rocks precinct, but once you get there, you won’t be complaining. Access to some of Sydney’s top sites (including the Opera House and the Museum of Contemporary Art) is unbeatable, while Circular Quay’s ferry wharves and train station are a 10-minute walk away. And have we mentioned the views?
With clean lines, an earthy colour palette and dark wood accents, the rooms at Park Hyatt Sydney are minimalist yet dashingly handsome. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows make the most of the location, while plush robes, marble benchtops and deep baths complete the picture in the ensuites. Accommodation ranges from 40-square-metre lairs to the 350-square-metre Sydney Suite with an outdoor terrace. Our pick is the Opera View room, which comes with a private balcony and offers uninterrupted views of Australia’s most famous building.
Food and Drink
The timber- and glass-clad Living Room, just off the hotel’s lobby, is a lovely spot for breakfast or afternoon tea, while the elegant Dining Room is the place for leisurely lunches or six-course feed-me dinners. Meanwhile at The Bar (they’re very literal with their names here) they’ll gladly precision mix you one of Sydney’s best Martinis.
For business travellers
There are five plush spaces for corporate goings-on, each of them equipped with state-of-the-art technology – think iPad-controlled lighting and sound. A team of dedicated event managers can organise gatherings of all sorts – from intimate meetings to business shindigs. But it’s the hotel’s cracking concierge desk that makes this property an indisputable choice for the business traveller.
For wellness travellers
There’s a rooftop pool and a 24-hour gym on the third floor, plus miles of running and walking trails in close proximity (hello, Royal Botanic Garden). But the most indulgent wellness drawcard is the onsite spa where treatments range from 30-minute facials to 90-minute massage rituals.
