World Heritage-listed Nightcap National Park, 40 minutes from Byron, is lushly beautiful by day (the four-hour return walk to the base of Minyon Falls is a must) but for a unique experience, try it after dark. Wearing night-vision goggles – a world first – takes it up a notch by enabling you to see the park’s nocturnal residents. But forget running through the rainforest commando-style. This is a peaceful, almost-silent stroll and you’ll stop often to watch spotted quolls, bandicoots, possums, frogs and the occasional carpet python in their element. The four-hour tour includes transport to and from Byron and ends with a warming mug of hot chocolate under the stars.
