For those wanting a canal boat cruise in England, Kris Cruisers in Datchet, near Windsor is a great option. They have a range of self-drive boats suitable for two to 12 people, no experience or qualifications are necessary. Your cruise from Datchet passes through a number of locks which are easily handled, firstly winding past Windsor with a good view of Windsor Castle. You will pass rowers from Eton College on your way to Maidenhead where you can stop for lunch at a number of pubs or restaurants, or take your own picnic hamper and nestle up against the riverbank.

To get to Datchet you can catch a train, but the easier and not too expensive option is to call Heathrow Station Cars +44 1753545000, also good for an airport pick-up and much cheaper than a black cab. The larger boats have an esky and CD player, and you can always stop at one of the many pubs if you need to resupply.

Kris Cruisers also offer purpose built live-aboard boats for those looking for a longer adventure, which, while perhaps lacking the charm of the traditional canal boats, are infinitely more comfortable.
