Ask the Concierge: Rome

24 June 2009

Luciano Zamberlan, Hotel Hassler Roma.

When friends are in town I take them for a drink at…
Il Palazzetto beside the Spanish Steps for its extensive wine list and Italian-style buffet, or Harry’s Bar on Via Veneto for its classic atmosphere.

The restaurant that best shows off Rome is…
Imàgo, which was recently awarded a Michelin star, is on the sixth floor of the Hotel Hassler. It has panoramic views over Rome.

For designer fashion I steer guests towards…
Via Condotti and the area around the hotel, for the best brands.

For the perfect gift/memento I’d shop at…
TAD on Via del Babuino.

If I were wanting to see some great art I’d visit…
The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

If it’s raining…
I would go to the National Gallery of Modern Art.

Sights that are over-rated include…
Castel Sant’Angelo National Museum.

If I were a visitor with a free day...
I would… begin by visiting the Roman Forum, the Colosseum and St Peter’s Basilica. I’d eat in a trattoria in the historic centre, then walk around Trastevere or Testaccio, which have kept a wonderful Roman character.
