The artsy village of Ubud abounds with galleries and great restaurants and il Giardino fuses the two with an enchanting setting in the ornamental gardens of the Hans Snel Gallery. While the scene is pure Bali, with mosaic pathways meandering around lotus ponds, stone statues and lush vertical gardens, food represents the authentic flavours of Italy. Homemade pasta highlights include crispy pan-fried gnocchi and roasted-pumpkin ravioli with burnt butter, almonds and sage – a dish you would find hard to beat, even in Italy. The Bellinis are sublime, the Balinese staff wonderfully attentive and the ambience seriously romantic, although not so much so that it would preclude a business meeting, family dinner or a gathering of friends who love a good meal washed down with a bottle of wine. Chef/owner Kali Sary made her mark in Bali as a DJ at legendary Club Double Six back in the ’80s; these days she mixes up the playlist at il Giardino with slow soulful jazz and Italian classics. Her Three Monkeys cafés in Ubud and Sanur are also worth checking out.

Location

Set in the foothills of Bali, 35 kilometres from Seminyak, Ubud is an arts village surrounded by rice fields, palm groves and dramatic forested ravines. Known as the cultural heart of Bali, it is also a haven for gourmands and those looking to tap into the more spiritual side of the island.
