Amarya Haveli, Delhi

As frequent visitors to Delhi, the French owners of Amarya Haveli, Alex and Mathieu, understood the challenges of finding somewhere comfortable to stay. In 2006 they found a two-storey home near the medieval village of Hauz Khaz and decorated it with hand-picked furniture from Rajasthan. They “gave soul to the house” by creating six comfortable but stylish, themed ensuite rooms named after Indian cities including Jaipur (pink with an impressive mirror), Jodhpur (blue with a serene Buddha sculpture), and Mumbai (red and silver with a neon Bollywood sign). Attention to detail is all-important: a big bunch of flowers in the welcome hall under the Mother India vintage film poster, bath products sourced from South India, the latest magazines and convenient wi-fi. Meals are delicious, and evening drinks on the leafy roof terrace is a great way to unwind with fellow guests.
