Allegro is on the first floor of the hotel, which has the double advantage of taking diners past some of the excellent art collection and putting them at Collins Street tree level once they are seated. The restaurant is modern in style, with clean lines and pleasing light. The kitchen is open, the tables have mats (not tablecloths) and the cooking provides twists on familiar dishes: grilled salmon is served on a parsnip puree with wilted baby spinach and a sauce with suggestions of vanilla and saffron. The signature dish is the platter, with three main-course tastes. The wine list is well-chosen, with a good range of wines by the glass.
Open: breakfast, lunch & dinner daily. Licensed. Mains $24-$45.
