Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland, UK. +44 1655 331 000.

The history of golf, as we know it, can be traced back at least 500 years and Scotland is considered the home of the sport. Even though the country has more than 550 courses, most golf fans rate Ailsa as the best. It is spectacular, with waves crashing against jagged cliffs, grassy hills rolling into the distance and the famous old lighthouse keeping regal watch. Such luscious scenery helped Ailsa win selection to host the British Open this year, for the fourth time. After significant renovation it has six new tees, including a spectacular 200-yard drive over the bay near the lighthouse at the 10th hole. The luxurious on-site Turnberry Hotel has also had an overhaul, with new restaurants and bars, and upgraded rooms. The work is intended to return the hotel to the vision of its architect, James Miller, who designed it during the golden age of Empire in 1906. Miller set out to create a temple for the golfer and the luxury hound. Turnberry certainly has enough five-star amenities to keep the golf-averse in heaven.
