We recently asked our Twitter friends to nominate some of their favourite museums or galleries from around the world. New York, London and Paris were among the most popular culture cities, but we also received suggestions for destinations as disparate as Miami and Addis Ababa (where the Ethiopian National Museum houses the famous early hominid "Lucy", named after the Beatles' track that has her in a Sky of Diamonds). Here are some of the responses:

@kelpenhagen I love the Brookyln Museum, LA MOCA, Neue Gallery in Manhattan, and discovered the Wolfsonian in Miami - it's excellent

@mariesornin Rodin museum's garden in paris + St Peter's grave

@Afficionados_HH London Tate. Tate modern. National portrait gallery. British museum... Australia AGNSW NGA. NGV... NYC Whitney. Guggenheim. Also in UK Saatchi gallery. And the preRaphalite house open in summer only

@tiphereth Spain got some great ones: Picasso museum, MACBA, thyssen bornemisza, Madrid's mod art name I can't remember... plus NY has hundreds but definitely Gagosian, the Met, MOMA & Fricke

@beckhopkinswine deYoung Museum in San Francisco - an amazing Tut exhibition - an absolute MUST see!

@lwandke San Francisco MoMa

@kirstyt Pergamon in Berlin for ancient treasures.

@jessicabrookes What about the Uffizi in Florence!? Am I too late? Its an amazing experience (even the cue is quite exciting).

@NicoleHaddow and International Centre of Photography NYC - just had a complete Richard Avedon exhibition. Divine. Website
